In the last issue, we explored the beauty of colorful butterflies through microscopic analysis techniques. In the current issue of the Goddess Festival, we used scanning electron microscopy and energy spectrum to study the effects of perm and hair dye on hair quality.

Preface

March 8th is the goddess festival of the celebration of the day, the heart of beauty, everyone has it. With the advancement of society and the continuous expansion of socialization, people are paying more and more attention to their appearance, and women are even more. Since the reform and opening up, hair has been gradually spread from young people to people of all ages. Many people frequently go to the barber shop and do all kinds of hair. During the haircut process, the barber will try to recommend various services such as perm and dyeing. By doing hair, people have improved their external image and improved their spiritual outlook. So, does hair have a bad effect on hair quality? How big is this impact?

With these problems, Xiao Bian reveals the effects of perming and dyeing hair on hair quality through microscopic observation of natural hair, perm and hair dye under scanning electron microscope.

The hair selected in this issue comes from three healthy adults. One of the hairs is natural and has not been processed by the day after tomorrow; one of the hairs has been ion-treated; the third person's hair has been dyed.

Microscopic Analysis of Natural Hair of Healthy Adults - Morphology Analysis and Composition Analysis

As can be seen from Figure 1, the natural hair structure of healthy adults is closely arranged. At larger magnifications, it can be seen that the hair surface consists primarily of a lamellar structure. These lamellar structures are generally distributed like fish scales, and the spacing between "fish scales" is about 11 um-15 um.

As can be seen from Figure 2, the ingredients of natural hair in healthy adults. The hair components mainly contain elements such as Ca, O, Na, S, and K. The natural hair of healthy adults is elastic, which is closely related to the disulfide bond between the amino acid chains and the more hydrogen bonds. Hair keratin is composed of a rather long chain of amino acids, most of which are cystine. Each chain is spiral and then bundled or rope-like. Each cystine unit has two cysteines, and the cysteines in the adjacent two chains form a strong chemical structure through disulfide bonds. The connection of numerous disulfide bonds makes keratin like a long ladder. The combination of disulfide bonds is very strong, much larger than the binding force of hydrogen bonds, and only chemically can be broken.

As can be seen from Figure 3, the ionized and dyed hair has a certain difference in appearance from the natural hair. The natural hair surface is flat and densely covered with a large number of fish scales. The surface of the ion-irradiated hair is not flat, has a certain distribution of fish scales, and has a certain amount of large granular material distribution. These substances are produced during the process of hair scalding. The surface of the hair dyed hair is relatively flat, with almost no distribution of fish scales and a small amount of smaller particulate matter.

As can be seen from Figure 4, perm and hair dye have some damage to the hair. The scaly structure of the natural hair surface is ordered. The scaly structure on the surface of the ion-irradiated hair is damaged to a certain extent, and the substances formed after these damage constitute a part of the particles in the foregoing. The surface of the hair that has been dyed has almost no fish scale structure, and only a small amount of undamaged fish scale structure can be found in the hair.

As can be seen from Figure 5, perm and hair dye have a certain effect on the hair. Hair that has been permed and dyed has a small amount of S element and a high content of Na element. When perming and dyeing hair, the curling iron stretches the polypeptide chain in the keratin of the hair. At this time, the reducing agent easily cuts off the disulfide bond, and the oxidizing agent forms a new disulfide bond in the elongated position. Theoretically, in theory, The hair thus forms and maintains a new form. However, there are still quite a few disulfide bonds that are broken, thus reducing hair quality.
