According to the physicist organization network recently, researchers from Purdue University and other institutions in the United States have made a new type of biosensor that can perform diabetes testing in a non-invasive manner and detect extremely low glucose concentrations in human saliva and tears. This technology does not require excessively complicated production steps, which can reduce the manufacturing cost of the sensor, and may help eliminate or reduce the chance of using acupuncture for diabetes testing. Related research papers were published in the journal "Advanced Functional Materials".
Most current sensors can measure glucose in blood, but cannot detect the glucose concentration in tears and saliva, and the new method can be applied to saliva, tears, blood, and urine, which has not been proven before.
The new biosensor includes three main parts: nanosheets made of graphene, platinum nanoparticles, and glucose oxidase. The nanosheets are like tiny rose petals, and each petal contains multiple stacked graphene layers. Incomplete chemical bonds also hang on the edges of the petals, allowing platinum nanoparticles to attach here. The combination of nanosheets and platinum nanoparticles can form an electrode, and then glucose oxidase can also be attached to the platinum nanoparticles. The enzyme converts glucose into peroxide and produces a signal on the electrode.
Normally, before obtaining a finished biosensor with nanostructures, it needs to undergo complicated processing steps, including photolithography, chemical processing, etching, etc. The advantage of these nanosheet petals is that they can grow on any surface without going through these steps, so it can be called an ideal choice for commercialization.
In addition to diabetes testing, this technology can also be used to sense multiple compounds to suit other medical conditions. For example, glucose oxidase can be replaced with glutamate oxidase to measure the neurotransmitter glutamate for Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease tests, or alcohol oxidase can be used to monitor alcohol in the body. It not only has a wide range of applications, but also has the advantages of speed and portability.
The researchers claim that this is the first time such a low detection limit has been found in such a wide detection range. This detector can detect glucose with a concentration of 0.3 micromolar, which is more sensitive than other electrochemical biosensors based on graphene, carbon nanotubes or metal nanoparticles.
In addition, this sensor can distinguish signals derived from glucose and other compounds, such as uric acid, ascorbic acid, and acetaminophen, which are generally present in the blood, which usually cause interference to the sensor. In addition, these compounds are also electrochemically active, which means they can generate electronic signals themselves, instead of glucose, which requires a reaction with an enzyme to generate a single signal.
