However, a study from the Institute of Vine and Wine Science (ISVV) in Bordeaux, France, claimed that multi-layer PET packaging caused a significant drop in wine quality in just six months.
This ongoing study was initiated by Martin ISVV, Associate Director, and Remi, a senior lecturer, who used gas analysis, color analysis, and tasting tests to determine the quality of red and white wines in different packaging formats, including 3 l boxed, 25 and 75cl single-layer PET bottles with screw caps, 25 and 75cl multi-layer PET bottles with screw caps, and 25 and 75cl glass bottles with screw caps. The study did not include glass bottles sealed with natural or synthetic cork stoppers.
According to its preliminary findings, ISVV stated that white wines using single-layer and multi-layer PET bottles were significantly oxidized after six months, while glass bottles were very stable, confirming that experts and novices taste The results obtained. For red wines packed in PET bottles, ISVV stated that only initial signs of quality deterioration were found, but there was not enough evidence to draw a definitive conclusion.
The published results did not include any packaging conditions for the test bottles, and Remy declined to provide further information before the publication of the study results at the end of the year. This refusal to disclose information to the public was strongly criticized by Jansen, the head of research and development at Artenius PET Packaging in Europe.
He said: "I think that the publication of the interim results is very unprofessional, which is obviously controversial, and the researchers have not provided an opportunity for industry experts to discuss and express.
