Rice belongs to short-day sunshine plants, that is, under the short-day sunshine conditions of about 10 hours of sunshine per day, it will head and bloom early. If the sunshine is 13 to 14 hours or more per day, it is difficult for rice to head, which means that it is difficult to harvest.
The Japan Agricultural Bioresources Research Institute recently announced that scientists at the institution planted rice under different sunshine lengths, and found that there are two kinds of "gates" in the rice that control the reception of sunlight signals. The first "gate" also determines the role of the "flowering gene". No matter how long the sunshine is, this "gate" will only open in the morning, so under the morning light, the "flowering gene" will play a role in promoting the growth of flower buds. The second "gate" determines the amount of "flowering suppressor gene" synthesis, and controls the synthesis of "flowering suppressor gene" according to the difference in sunshine time, thereby inhibiting flowering. The above two "gates" control the flowering period of rice.
Research scientist Jing Zeyi pointed out that these two "gates" are actually controlled by two genes. Although there are regional differences in the length of sunshine, if the two genes are used to regulate the flowering period, high-yield rice varieties that can adapt to various sunshine conditions can be cultivated.
