How tall is Mount Everest?

Located on the border between China and Nepal, Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world and is the top of the earth.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the summit of Mount Everest, the Chinese amateur mountaineering team and the Sino-South Korean team climbed Everest from the north side in late May. In addition, the United States, Russia, Japan, India, Nepal, Romania and other mountaineering teams also climbed Everest from the southern slope or the northern slope respectively.

However, the altitude of the world’s highest peak, which has recently reached the newspapers and other media, is not the same. There are 8848 meters, 8848.13 meters, and 8840, 8850, and 8882 meters.

How tall is Mount Everest? As early as July 23, 1975, the Xinhua News Agency authorized the announcement that: China's surveying and mapping workers accurately measured the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest has an altitude of 8,848.13 meters. In 1975, the Chinese team climbed Mount Everest for the second time from the North Slope. At the same time, Chinese surveying and mapping workers conducted surveying and mapping work on Mount Everest. On May 27th, nine members of the Chinese mountaineering team climbed Mount Qomolangma and erected a metal plaque at the summit of Mount Everest. The accurate data of 8848.13 meters above sea level is exactly what the Chinese surveying and mapping workers obtained after completing the complete measurement data of the location and height of the Mount Everest. After theoretical research, it was carefully calculated and repeatedly verified, and the snowfall at the summit of Everest was deducted. Depth comes later. Its maximum positive and negative error is less than 0.36 meters. This data has been recognized throughout the world. Ever since then, in authoritative maps and other publications, Mount Everest has an altitude of 8848 or 8848.13 meters above sea level.

It should be said that the height of Everest reflects the human understanding of the highest peak in the world. Different results have appeared due to different historical periods, different countries, and different methods of measuring Everest. According to records, in 1852 the Indian Survey Bureau used geodetic methods to measure the height of Mount Everest at 8,840 meters; in 1954, Indian geographers measured different locations on the south side of Mount Everest as the benchmark, resulting in an altitude of 8,848 meters. To date, Nepal has called Mount Everest the Sagarmata peak with an altitude of 8,848 meters.

In 1999, the National Geographic Society of the United States used the then-global satellite positioning system to measure. After analyzing the measurement data, the Boulder University of Colorado calculated that the altitude of the Mount Everest is 8,850 meters.

In the 1990s, Chinese scientists stated that Everest is still full of vitality and rises at an uneven rate every year. Although Mount Everest is still growing tall, it is now said that Mount Everest is right at 8848 meters and 8848.13 meters above sea level. It is not advisable to say that Mount Everest is 8850 meters above sea level, 8840 meters above sea level, and other altitudes.
