Dow Launches New Level Packaging Materials

For Dow, the 2010K show provided a stage for its newly developed materials to show its highlights.

Bill Fordyce, director of global polyethylene R&D at Dow Chemical Company, headquartered in Midland, Michigan, presented several recent R&D results at a press conference held during K Show. These include:

• The Clarilite brand lid and closure resin, belonging to Dow's Polyethylene and Polypropylene series, retains its original taste and odor, but at a lower cost. The product can be used for beverage bottles as well as pharmaceutical and cosmetic containers.

• Dowlex brand PE-RT for industrial pipelines maintains hydrostatic strength over long periods at high temperatures. The previous product can only be used for smaller pipes.

• Low-shrinkage Inspire PP for non-pressure pipes can increase pipe speed by 10%.

• New rotomoulded grade high performance PE, with increased strength.

• Five new levels of high melt flow PP for rigid packaging containers.

• The Durelast brand reinforcement system for bathtubs uses a polyurethane spray process.

• AmplifyTY brand functional polymer for multi-layer food packaging.

• Sealution brand "Peel Polymer" for easy-open packaging.

• Enlight polyolefin encapsulation film for photovoltaic modules.

• Ecolibrium brand seed oil-based bioplasticizers for PVC wire applications that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40%. Fordyce described Ecolibrium as "a breakthrough in the field of sustainable development chemistry."
