RUN2RAIL explores 3D printing and carbon fiber composites for a lighter, more comfortable train!

Recently, Huddersfield University of the United Kingdom has received a £300,000 ($4.1 billion) investment in the development of lighter, more efficient and more comfortable "locomotives." The project will investigate the use of new materials such as carbon fiber composites and new manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing to improve train bogie construction.

In the EU, trains provide an important transportation network for people and goods, so it is essential to keep the vehicles and railways up to date.

The research project is part of the EU's RUN2RAIL project and is managed by the University of Huddersfield Railway Research Institute (IRR). RUN2RAIL itself belongs to the larger-scale Shift2Rail supported by the European Union, aimed at improving and modernizing railway vehicles with an overall funding of over 2 million Euros.

The Huddersfield team will work with the Polytechnic University of Milan, RINA consultants and the Italian engineering company Blue Group to invest £300,000 to explore the potential of using new materials to advance and optimize the components of railway vehicles.

At present, steel frames are the material of choice for the manufacture of train bogies and running gear, and their construction is sturdy and durable, but its form is limited. By turning to new versatile materials such as carbon fiber composites, the material is both lightweight and operable, and has high strength, which opens up opportunities for train chassis design and functionality.

As the director of IRR, Professor Simon Iwnicki, explained: “You can have any number of curves or shapes to form the shape you want, and the steel frame has only a certain number of shapes. And, carbon fiber is much lighter, you can Put the material where you want it, which makes it lighter."

A key advantage of carbon fiber composites is that they can be printed in almost any shape or structure. The Huddersfield team did not abandon this material because it plans to build a train bogie structure using a robotic additive manufacturing system.

In order to produce new rail vehicle components, such as axle boxes and brake brackets, metal 3D printing will also be explored. The research team said that with the continuous development of technology, the application of train manufacturing will become more feasible.

Professor Iwnicki believes that traditional steel structures will still be used to make train wheels. “We are already thinking about making alternative materials for wheels or axles, but the failure modes and risks are not fully understood. But we are studying,” he said.

In the end, the project is seeking to use new materials and technologies to improve rail transport and make rail vehicles “lighter, more reliable, more comfortable and quieter”. The RUN2RAIL project has been launched and is expected to be completed in August 2019.

If you are unfamiliar with the rail industry, the bogie is the chassis structure that connects the axle to the train's car or rail vehicle.

Chopper And Mixer Series

Bowl chopper and vacuum mixer are widely used in sausage production line, including bowl cutter, bowl chopper, meat mixer, vacuum bowl cutter, vacuum cutter, vacuum mixer. Only the excellent performance machines can guarantee the high quality of products. 30 years of experience allows us to design the most advanced chopping and mixing machines. Vacuum sealing technology is applied in these machines preventing protein and fat being oxygenized and damaged, keeping freshness, original color and taste, reducing air bubbles and enhancing flexibility.
The vacuum mixer adopts double shaft and helix paddle structure, which will mix raw material in circle movement, to reach the perfect mixing effect.

Bowl cutter can cut meat into emulsified paste by high speed chopping knives and mix up other additives into meat sufficiently.
