Gertrud Morlock, a researcher at the University of Leipzig in Germany, used the Prusa i3 open source 3D printer to successfully produce thin-layer chromatography plates with a thin layer of 3D printed silica gel.
The Prusa i3 can be customized for a variety of applications as it is sold as a kit. Morlock and her colleague Dimitri Fichou replaced the extruder in the original kit with a 3D printed thin silicone layer. According to Morlock, this custom Prusa i3 3D printer was designed by Fichou for thin layer chromatography.
Thin layer chromatography is a chromatographic separation technique that separates, identifies, and quantifies mixed samples by separating the mixture onto a thin layer of coated material. Typically, the surface material consists of silica gel and the carrier is a glass or plastic sheet.
Thin layer chromatography on a glass plate is an accurate method or process that requires absolute precision and accuracy. Morlock and Fichou developed a special position sensor for the custom Prusa i3 extruder because the thin layer of silica could erode from the board or cause an inconsistent surface.
The position sensor ensures that the extruder or syringe containing silicone is always at a distance from the glass, allowing a flat 3D printed surface to be created on the glass. “The layer printing process is fast, printing a 10×10cm format, 0.2 mm thick layer in less than 5 minutes. Morlock and Fichou also printed a 40-channel board in 3D, which took less than 2 minutes to print and cost $0.40.
