3D printing technology will revolutionize the construction industry

After years of development, 3D printing technology has taken off mysterious veil and began to be used in various fields. Recently, there have been reports from foreign media that Dutch designer Joris Laarman plans to use 3D printing technology to bring new changes to the existing construction industry. His plan is to bring the designed building-specific 3D printing robot to the edge of the Amsterdam canal in 2017. Then he just started the machine and left, a beautiful steel bridge will appear on the water two months later. And this is not a conceptual work, but a bridge that can be used normally, and the people of Amsterdam can walk and use it for decades.

In order to realize this plan, JorisLaarman has set up a new company called “MX3D Research and Development”, specializing in the development and production of six-axis robots for construction. These robots can be used for large-scale construction tasks. As long as they are orbited, they can even complete high-altitude suspension operations, using metal and resin to print out the designed buildings. MX3D is not a high-tech concept product, it is more like the innovation of engineering machinery. As early as February last year, Joris Laarman showed the 3D printing of metal sculptures in the air under the MX3D system, which left a deep impression.

But Joris Laarman also said that after all, it is a work done in a laboratory and indoor environment, and in the real world, you will encounter more unpredictable problems. The effects of various weather conditions and temperature changes, malfunctions of long-running machines, and even drunken people and children throwing items may pose a fatal threat to the progress of the project. Therefore, it is important to enhance the self-detection and error correction of the machine and improve the anti-interference ability. To solve these problems, Joris Laarman sought some help from the architectural and engineering software company Autodesk, and Autodesk's director of strategic innovation, Maurice Conti, said that in the future, MX3D will work deeper and solve the problems that MX3D is facing now.

“We are often thinking: What kind of iconic 3D printed architecture can not only benefit the public, but also fully demonstrate our technical strength?” Joris Laarman said in a telephone interview. “Then we think that this is the Netherlands. What is more exciting than printing a bridge on an old city canal. It is not only an excellent publicity, but if the MX3D can build a bridge out of thin air, what else is there? Is it impossible to print? The bridge design will be 24 feet long and will support the residents of Amsterdam to walk normally. The design of the bridge is very beautiful and complex, and each detail looks like it was handmade. It is the great advantage of 3D printed architecture. As long as there is a suitable design, in theory you can make any shape appearance, which is impossible for traditional architecture.

And unlike ordinary 3D printed materials, the MX3D build bridge uses a new composite steel that has been successfully developed by Delft University. It can be applied as a layer of 3D printer like a normal material, but its strength is absolutely at the level of building materials. The 3D printing robot produced by MX3D is completely different from the general desktop 3D printer. It looks more like a train running on a paved track. And it doesn't print like a jet, but it's more like a weld. More bearings and booms allow it to swing at more angles, and it can print the track that will run before moving forward.

In the near future, we may see such a scene. On the busy construction site, we no longer see any construction workers, there is no more dust in the sky, no more terrible noise, only one different model. The construction robots work together. This was originally a scene in a science fiction movie, but it is now so close to reality. However, it depends on whether MX3D can accomplish this huge challenge. Although they have already cooperated with some of the industry's top bridge engineering companies, there are still many problems to be solved, but they still have two years to prepare. Once they succeed, they will completely change the landscape of the construction industry.
