The Olympian Zeus statue, located in the Temple of Zeus in Athens, was created by the sculptor Phidias in 422 BC and is recognized as one of the "Seven Wonders of the World". Today, a team is copying it out with Stratasys' 3D printer , but at a smaller size.
According to the plan, this 3D printed version of the Zeus statue will be one of the main exhibits at a new exhibition at the Millenium Gate Museum in Atlanta. The exhibition is mainly to echo the opening of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The exhibition titled "The Games: Ancient Olympia to Atlanta to Rio" will be held from August 20, 2016 until January 2, 2017. Includes Hearst Castle from San Simeon, California, and Greek artifacts from the Michael C. Carlos Museum in Atlanta.
It is understood that this Olympian Zeus colossus was created by the ancient Greeks in order to express their awe in the legendary Greek god, which was placed in the Temple of Zeus. According to historical records, the ancient Greeks used the so-called "chryselephantine" technique in the creation of this statue, which is the addition of ivory muscles and gold clothing to the wooden bracket. The throne is also a gold-bottomed gold embellished with ebony, gemstones and glass, which lasted for eight years and is 40 feet tall. But unfortunately, after standing for 900 years, this giant statue is still inevitably destroyed in the turmoil, disappearing into the long river of history, only from the ancient Greek coins can give a glimpse of his style.
This time, Stratasys Additive Manufacturing recreated this legendary statue for the first time since its destruction. Based on the image footage obtained from the statue, the designers worked with a team from Kennesaw State University in Georgia to convert the images into a CAD file using 3D modeling software. The production team then used the powerful Stratasys Fortus 900mc 3D printer to print the 3D statue.
It is reported that this Fortus 900mc can let users 3D print all kinds of parts from small to large with unparalleled precision and efficiency. It can be said that FDM is the only leading 3D printing technology in the use of engineering-grade thermoplastic 3D printing of the most durable parts - and is also the most suitable for creating Zeus colossus for display.
It is understood that this work will be officially unveiled at the Millennium Gate Museum on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the 100-year Olympic Games held in Atlanta in 1996.
“Overview of history, the most precious works of art have been destroyed and disappeared in history for various reasons. In the past, this disappearance means that we have lost them forever. That is why we will invest Such huge sums of money come to 3D to print these art treasures," said Jeremy Kobus, curator of the Millennium Gate Museum.
