After two years of hard work and of course 3D printing technology , the BMW Classic Car Division finally completed the restoration of the BMW 507, a car legend Elvis Presley.
Few people have heard of this model and have seen it less. In 1958, Elvis bought the sports car in Germany, and only paid $3,750 for the symbolic time. The first color was white, and it was said that when Elvis fell in love with the young German girl, it was painted red, which symbolized their dark red kiss.
Later, Elvis sold the car to a Tommy Charles, who sold a Chrysler brand car in New York. The car was modified to participate in the local short-distance acceleration race. In 1968, he was transferred again and sold to California engineer Jack Castor, who has been parked in the warehouse for decades. Until two years ago, Jack Castor sold the car to the BMW headquarters for repair.
A lot of work made the BMW team spend more time than expected, from completely dismantling it to removing the engine and worn interiors, as well as red paint.
As time went by, a large number of parts on the BMW 507 were no longer produced. So the BMW team thought of 3D printing , because the production of eliminated parts is the biggest advantage of this technology. Many parts are directly remanufactured through 3D printing, and as a result, tradition has encountered high technology. From the dashboard to the leather, BMW worked tirelessly to make a complete replica.
When it comes to windows and door handles, they let the 3D scanner work first. By scanning the prototype, they can make a new functional 3D printed part. However, many components that must be made in the traditional way cannot use this method. Interestingly, when they did this, they decided to make a new small series for the replacement parts of this sports car, and now they have collected limited stocks in the BMW Group's classic parts workshop.
The 150-horsepower 3.2-liter V8 engine will be rebuilt with spare parts. In order to achieve the original state as much as possible, BMW used the spraying method 60 years ago to restore the visual effect of the original paint when the paint was restored. In addition, there are black and white interiors, four steering wheels, Becker Mexico radio, etc., all in original configuration.
Those who want to learn about the Elvis car can see the refurbished BMW 507 at the Concours d'Elegance show in Pebble Beach, California on August 21, 2016.
